Orchard / Alfalfa Mix

Our Orchard / Alfalfa mix starts out with a lot of TLC to get it off to a good start. The seedbed is worked 6 times to get a firm and level field. After the seeding, the ground is scoured to remove any rocks that may be surfaced or will damage equipment.
The first crop of new seeding will have a considerable amount of weeds. That crop will be set aside for other outlets. Once the crop is established, the field will remain generally weed free for the next 4 to 6 years of production.
The cutting of each crop is monitored for any blossoms in the alfalfa and weather conditions. With a lot of luck from Mother Nature, the hay is raked and baled within 3 days. All bales are quickly picked up and stored inside to prevent any chance of rain on the bales. All hay crops are then put into the building and inventoried for future sales.
Our mixtures of Orchard / Alfalfa are controlled by the amount of rain that we receive. The Orchard grass requires a lot of rain and cool temperatures, and cannot stand a dry spell for very long. The more rain the stronger the Orchard mix. Alfalfa has deep roots and can survive on dry weather. Our goal is to get an 85/15 orchard / alfalfa mix, with a 50/50 mix being a very popular combination also.
Majority of our orchard/alfalfa mixes are put up in small squares. We have 5 small square balers with 2 more from a neighbor on standby. We also have 2 medium size square balers. We also put up medium squares (600 lb bales) and rounds on special orders.
Alfalfa

Our Alfalfa crop is seeded the same as the mixed hay. Thirty days after the seeding, the alfalfa is sprayed to get rid of any weeds that came up. The first crop of new seeding is usually cut in the middle of July and the second cutting at the end of August.
With a lot of care and the right weather conditions, well-cared fields will last 4 to 6 years. We cut the hay with a disc mower and crimper to break the stems for faster drying.
The pure alfalfa fields are baled with the medium size square baler making 500 to 600 lb bales, which is preferred by the dairy farmers. We also bale the pure alfalfa in small squares and rounds on special orders.
