Our Company
We started in the hay business in 1988. In
1993, our hay crop was wiped out to winterkill and excessive rains. We stayed out of the hay business for 5 years, and were
back into it as a hobby and to supply a local dairy farmer. After 3 years of raising pure alfalfa, we started to test the
horse customers' needs. From there the business has taken off. Our only crop now is the orchard / alfalfa and pure alfalfa.
Everyone can raise spoiled or junk hay, but it takes a lot of time and patience to put up
quality hay. We do not sell hay to you as a one-time customer, because our goal is to be your hay supplier.
We cut our first crop on May 25 with weather permitting and then every 30 days after that. By cutting at these times, we try
to eliminate the alfalfa from getting course and loosing its feed value.
We use a John Deere
956 disc mower with a crimper to help speed up the drying process. On the 3rd day, the hay is flipped with a wheel rake or
inverter. With a lot of sunshine, low humidity and wind, we start baling around 3:00 in the afternoon. Baling will continue
until the field is done or the humidity makes the hay too tough (picks up air moisture) to bale. All hay is picked up and
delivered to the storage shed yet that night to prevent any chance of rain damage.
We are
located in South West Minnesota between Hadley and Slayton on US Hwy 30. Our hay shed is located on the west side of Slayton.
The building is large enough to load and unload inside in any weather conditions.
I
am an exhibitor at the Minnesota Horse Expo. at the end of April each year at the Minnesota State Fair Grounds
in St. Paul. Stop in and say hello and see some samples of our products.
Our Employees
Employees play an important role in any business. Here is where we get a chance
to tell you a little about ourselves. We as the Nelson Crew welcomes you to the "Meet the Crew" section. This section
is dedicated to the crew because they are the ones who make the Nelson Hay business successful and help meet the customers
expectations.
Please see the "Meet the Crew" page to learn more about us.
